A spirit of exploration is essential in ceramics. Ceramics is inherently a field full of opportunities for experimentation, and the materials and methods we choose are so deeply intertwined with the intent of our work.
I am currently an artist working sculpturally in ceramics. I am most enlivened when working on sculpting by utilizing the full extent of the unique characteristics specific to clay. I am interested in experimenting with the various textures of clay, which can flow like water, soften like mochi, or harden like a rock. From my point of view, ceramics is the ideal medium for this moment, being at once rooted in the ancient history of humanity’s earliest forms of making, while also being a relevant counterpoint to an abundance of mass-produced objects in our times.
My practice is motivated by a responsive observation of the individual’s relationship to society. In particular, I probe the connection between human beings and the features of our natural environme ㅇ nt.
The hollowness of vessels encapsulates the uniqueness of human beings as I see them. Like we constantly fill the vessels with something, I believe humans are filling out their unique vessels with a stack of numerous individual choices. Just as infinite contents bloom in vessels, humans also make new experiences and possibilities by making choices every moment. I focus on diverse shapes of vessels and ‘inside’ the vessels by randomly stacking claylike glaze while utilizing random objects for the texture. The work is born of spontaneous dripping and sliding of glazed that occurs inside the vessels.
